How To Building Value With Social Marketing

timewastrsImage by cherwenka via FlickrSocial networks are for far more than kids. Social marketing is a science with many useful strategies for monetization and building value. How can you show value with your social marketing campaign? You might be different. You might be personal. You might get technical, answering questions. You might walk readers through what you do in a day. In other words, you get creative.

Here are a few useful strategies to get you started building value with social marketing.

Take Risks
This may seem obvious, but many of us forget social marketing was made popular not just when teenagers started using it, but when businesses started. Some early adaptors had huge success with Facebook and Twitter by taking a risk and trying something different. Think beyond your business page and today’s status update and do something complete out of the norm. Come up with a campaign that will utilize its interactive and viral capabilities.

Get Personal
The myth is that being personal is bad. Another myth is that you have to show what is happening in your life every moment. Unless you’re an entrepreneur living a vicarious life, this is unnecessary, but you can build value by showing happy moments you had with family. Instead of looking like a corporate suit out for money, you can appear to be a regular person living life. This boosts your value and makes you stand out from the competition.

Answer Questions, Or Ask
If your business is in a more technical field, perhaps one where customers don’t exactly understand how you help them, you might show them how you do certain things. If you run a computer design company, you may answer common questions about faults in computer designs, or how much it really costs to build a computer, or even how you build them in the initial stages. On the other hand, you may ask questions of your customers yourself. You may ask for complaints or how they use your product. You may ask how you can help them save money rather. These are the types of strategies that build value.

Video
While creating an entire video can seem daunting, just about anyone can do it for cheap. And YouTube commercials actually get viewed, especially if you can somehow add humor. Just as some movie trailers have taken off on YouTube, your product on safely downloading music with the right program may become a hit. This happens more often than you might think.

Get Creative
Bottom line: Have fun with your social marketing campaign. Don’t follow all the rules you read online. Get creative and try some new ways to market your product or service and you’re sure to build value.

Google Forecloses On Content Farms With “Farmer” Algorithm Update

Google Appliance as shown at RSA Expo 2008 in ...Image via WikipediaIn January, Google promised that it would take action against content farms that were gaining top listings with “shallow” or “low-quality” content. Now the company is delivering, announcing a change to its ranking algorithm designed take out such material.
New Change Impacts 12% Of US Results

The new algorithm — Google’s “recipe” for how to rank web pages — starting going live yesterday, the company told me in an interview today.

Google changes its algorithm on a regular basis, but most changes are so subtle that few notice. This is different. Google says the change impacts 12% (11.8% is the unrounded figure) of its search results in the US , a far higher impact on results than most of its algorithm changes. The change only impacts results in the US. It may be rolled out worldwide in the future.

While Google has come under intense pressure in the past month to act against content farms, the company told me that this change has been in the works since last January.
Officially, Not Aimed At Content Farms

Officially, Google isn’t saying the algorithm change is targeting content farms. The company specifically declined to confirm that, when I asked. However, Matt Cutts — who heads Google’s spam fighting team — told me, “I think people will get the idea of the types of sites we’re talking about.”

Well, there are two types of sites “people” have been talking about in a way that Google has noticed: “scraper” sites and “content farms.” It mentioned both of them in a January 21 blog post:

We’re evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others’ content and sites with low levels of original content. We’ll continue to explore ways to reduce spam, including new ways for users to give more explicit feedback about spammy and low-quality sites.

As “pure webspam” has decreased over time, attention has shifted instead to “content farms,” which are sites with shallow or low-quality content.

I’ve bolded the key sections, which I’ll explore more next.
The “Scraper Update”

About a week after Google’s post, Cutts confirmed that an algorithm change targeting “scraper” sites had gone live:

This was a pretty targeted launch: slightly over 2% of queries change in some way, but less than half a percent of search results change enough that someone might really notice. The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.

“Scraper” sites are those widely defined as not having original content but instead pulling content in from other sources. Some do this through legitimate means, such as using RSS files with permission. Others may aggregate small amounts of content under fair use guidelines. Some simply “scrape” or copy content from other sites using automated means — hence the “scraper” nickname.

In short, Google said it was going after sites that had low-levels of original content in January and delivered a week later.

By the way, sometimes Google names big algorithm changes, such as in the case of the Vince update. Often, they get named by WebmasterWorld, where a community of marketers watches such changes closely, as happened with last year’s Mayday Update.

In the case of the scraper update, no one gave it any type of name that stuck. So, I’m naming it myself the “Scraper Update,” to help distinguish it against the “Farmer Update” that Google announced today.
But “Farmer Update” Really Does Target Content Farms

“Farmer Update?” Again, that’s a name I’m giving this change, so there’s a shorthand way to talk about it. Google declined to give it a public name, nor do I see one given in a WebmasterWorld thread that started noticing the algorithm change as it rolled out yesterday, before Google’s official announcement.

Postscript: Internally, Google told me this was called the “Panda” update, but they didn’t want that on-the-record when I wrote this original story. About a week later, they revealed the internal name in a Wired interview.

How can I say the Farmer Update targets content farms when Google specifically declined to confirm that? I’m reading between the lines. Google previously had said it was going after them.

Since Google originally named content farms as something it would target, you’ve had some of the companies that get labeled with that term push back that they are no such thing. Most notable has been Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt, who previously told AllThingsD about Google’s planned algorithm changes to target content farms:

It’s not directed at us in any way.

I understand how that could confuse some people, because of that stupid “content farm” label, which we got tagged with. I don’t know who ever invented it, and who tagged us with it, but that’s not us…We keep getting tagged with “content farm”. It’s just insulting to our writers. We don’t want our writers to feel like they’re part of a “content farm.”

I guess it all comes down to what your definition of a “content farm” is. From Google’s earlier blog post, content farms are places with “shallow or low quality content.”

In that regard, Rosenblatt is right that Demand Media properties like eHow are not necessarily content farms, because they do have some deep and high quality content. However, they clearly also have some shallow and low quality content.

That content is what the algorithm change is going after. Google wouldn’t confirm it was targeting content farms, but Cutts did say again it was going after shallow and low quality content. And since content farms do produce plenty of that — along with good quality content — they’re being targeted here. If they have lots of good content, and that good content is responsible for the majority of their traffic and revenues, they’ll be fine. In not, they should be worried.
More About Who’s Impacted

As I wrote earlier, Google says it has been working on these changes since last January. I can personally confirm that several of Google’s search engineers were worrying about what to do about content farms back then, because I was asked about this issue and thoughts on how to tackle it, when I spoke to the company’s search quality team in January 2010. And no, I’m not suggesting I had any great advice to offer — only that people at Google were concerned about it over a year ago.

Since then, external pressure has accelerated. For instance, start-up search engine Blekko blocked sites that were most reported by its users to be spam, which included many sites that fall under the content farm heading. It gained a lot of attention for the move, even if the change didn’t necessarily improve Blekko’s results.

In my view, that helped prompt Google to finally push out a way for Google users to easily block sites they dislike from showing in Google’s results, via Chrome browser extension to report spam.

Cutts, in my interview with him today, made a point to say that none of the data from that tool was used to make changes that are part of the Farmer Update. However, he went on to say that of the top 50 sites that were most reported as spam by users of the tool, 84% of them were impacted by the new ranking changes. He would not confirm or deny if Demand’s eHow site was part of that list.

“These are sites that people want to go down, and they match our intuition,” Cutts said.

In other words, Google crafted a ranking algorithm to tackle the “content farm problem” independently of the new tool, it says — and it feels like tool is confirming that it’s getting the changes right.
The Content Farm Problem

By the way, my own definition of a content farm that I’ve been working on is like this:

* Looks to see what are popular searches in a particular category (news, help topics)
* Generates content specifically tailored to those searches
* Usually spends very little time and or money, even perhaps as little as possible, to generate that content

The problem I think content farms are currently facing is with that last part — not putting in the effort to generate outstanding content.

For example, last night I did a talk at the University Of Utah about search trends and touched on content farm issues. A page from eHow ranked in Google’s top results for a search on “how to get pregnant fast,” a popular search topic. The advice:

Google over the years have persistently pursued innovation, constantly updated its algorithm or algorythm (if that is the way you spell it) and refused to accept the limitations of existing models.

As a result, Google's latest development was the breakthrough PageRank™ technology that changed the way searches are conducted today. And if there is one SEO company that knows how the algorithm works and how would it would boost your rankings on Google organic search that would be White Hat Works.

What's new about Google's latest algorithm in 2010 / 2011?

There is much talk in the SEO world about what Google is going to focus on in 2010. Matt Cutts, head of Google’s Webspam team has mentioned and hinted in various forums, Youtube and on his Blog that SEO professionals' latest focus should be in 2010. Part of the Caffeine project, apparently in 2010 the speed of your website and web pages loading will now play a major factor in the algorithm.

SEO E-Marketing ResultsTo achieve faster speed your website needs to be hosted on a super fast host and reducing the overall size of your web pages. Obviously this means moving to a better Internet Service Provider and serving faster websites by increasing the download speed.

This will mean less content on a page, utilising CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and images have to load faster. A webpage downloading speed of 3 seconds or less is pretty good, but 1 second or lower might have to be achieved in cases. You can now measure the speed with a program in the Google's Webmaster Tools.

Does this mean Google in a way is pushing developers to write and create better websites that load faster and content writers to write quality content instead of quantity content? and the digital marketing guys, will they have to be at the same time creative but their art work must be short, sweat and fast loading? Does using flash animations go out the window? Hosting Video clips on your own website? would that be wise? or better to be hosted on You Tube instead?

All these are questions and probably the answers you are looking for is, yes it is!

What could happen is Google favouring certain websites and in the other hand penalise other ones. Websites owners that keep stuffing their pages with content, customer reviews, endless blogs and articles, videos, links and endless images will be penalised.

The good news is websites that are clean, focused, compatible and fast will benefit.

Many SEO professionals are saying that this is not fair for the SME's (small to medium sized business) that cannot afford to be hosted on super fast hosts and do not have large teams that can restructure their websites to go faster. The question is how fast can the cooperate companies react to the ever growing demands of the Internet? Probably not and it will take them months before they even decide what to do. In the other hand SME's probably will be in a better position to react a lot faster due to quick decision making compensating for all the other factors.

The SEO e-marketers also mention about countries that have slow internet access, like in Scotland and other rural areas where you cannot get broadband? Are they going to get penalised? Probably not, as its the Google Bots measuring the speed and not at what speed the website is loaded in these areas on an end users computer. Actually Google in a way by "forcing" developers to increase their websites overall speed would mean these areas with no broadband will benefit in the long run. Mobile phone users with their web enabled devices like the iPhone and Nexus by Google will be able to load more and more websites, specially the ones that are more lean and load faster.

White Hat Works Conclusion for 2010 and 2011:

* Host your website on a super fast Internet Service Provider
* Use CSS as much as possible and comply with website usability
* Write quality content, not quantity content
* Convert your a Flash website to a HTML website
* Export your Flash animations where possible - more SEO Tips
* Keep images and their size to a minimum without loosing the quality
* Test your website in various browsers and mobile phone devices
* Make your website Google Friendly
* Get free guidance from a reputable SEO E-marketing Company

Faster websites means Google can keep up with the growth of the Internet without the need to keep buying and installing new servers. Many have asked, how many servers does Google have? This is a well kept secret, but if you do your maths and calculations the number of servers could be around 700,000 and growing. These servers are spread over 100 data-centres around the globe and makes Google the largest IT producer of (Co2) carbon emissions on Earth.

Google is in the business of providing a top notch service and encouraging growth, but at the same time be profitable by keeping their costs and carbon emissions down.

Hence the need for this new factor that will be included in the updated Google 2010 Algorythm. Maybe the main reason Google is focusing on speed is because what they really are trying to do is to reduce their carbon foot print and we (SEO guys and website owners) all need to help them achieve this.

One effected company said:

We are an ecommerce site that has been running for almost 5 months and have seen steadily growing traffic. We have made no major changes to our website recently but are continually adding content and products to the site. Our site has been severely affected (almost 50% down on traffic) since last Tuesday (07/12/10) which coincides with the latest 2011 algorithm change which was the response to the New York Times article regarding Black Hat SEO techniques.

I have struggled to find much information about it and it doesn't seem to be widely talked about at the moment. As far as I can tell it will specifically target site reviews and penalise people with negative feedback. Because we are a relatively young site we don't have any feedback (negative or otherwise). Is it visible that this could have such a dramatic effect on a site that has essentially done nothing wrong and has anyone had the same problem?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated because we are being hit particularly hard in the lead up to Christmas which should be our busiest weeks.

SEO and PPC Long Tail Terms

Comparing Google and Yahoo! Search ResultsImage by pb via Flickr

If you’re arcade about for chase agent access (SEO) services, or aloof acquirements how to advance chase agent rankings, you apparently noticed that bodies in the SEO industry use a lot of terminology. One frequently acclimated byword at Web.com Chase Agency is “long appendage search” which applies appropriately to SEO and Pay-Per-Click (PPC) management. Its accent cannot be underestimated.

Generally speaking (and awful oversimplified), a “long tail” keyword is a byword that is 3 words or longer. Understanding of continued appendage bulk involves a assertive ability of chase agent user behavior. Bodies usually alpha analytic with a distinct chat or two chat phrase, which would be advised a “short tail” phrase. The chase agent afresh spits out a continued annual of accessible results. If bodies don’t like what they see, they add addition chat or two to the concern and chase again. If this byword is accordant to what you are offering, this chase blazon can be awful valuable. Accepting a bout for a continued appendage search, whether it is in accustomed chase after-effects or PPC ads, is a abundant way to about-face a aggregation into a advantageous customer.

(note that the chase agent “long tail” differs from the internet sales “long tail” archetypal area you can accomplish money accepting a assorted set of articles on sites like Amazon.com or Ebay.com.)

Millions of bodies chase the internet every day, application millions of altered chase variations. According to a accepted white paper, 41% of bodies will echo a chase back they don’t get the aftereffect they want. They do this by authoritative the chase appendage longer, or re-phrasing the search. If you can’t allow to get an exact bout on the aboriginal search, this 41% allotment represents a huge opportunity.

Getting the best out of continued appendage SEO

Without discounting the aerial accumulated that you can get from analogous short-tail agreement (which you should about go after) continued appendage agreement can be moneymakers. Accepting begin for long-tail agreement does not consistently booty as abundant accomplishment for anniversary keyword phrase, but we about admonish creating added pages of agreeable that can abduction these searches. For instance, if you advertise bags of altered appointment products, you can get continued appendage after-effects like “hp inkjet ablaze white cardboard c1861a” with far beneath accomplishment than the chat “paper.” You will charge a arcade barrow arrangement that can actualize assorted alone pages that are chase agent friendly. Agenda that you charge a big abundant accumulation of articles to annual for the almost low bulk of searches for anniversary item, and you ability charge to add agreeable and a few links to artefact pages that are added competitive. In short, continued appendage searches actualize an accumulated of customers, but they can be acutely advantageous back you agency in lifetime chump value.

There are several added accessible means to get long-tail cartage for actual little money. You can put white affidavit on your armpit area chase engines can acquisition them. You can acknowledgment accepted chump questions online. You can add a forum, but this usually requires a assertive bulk of maintenance. If you accept lots of abstruse blueprint for your products, and they aren’t barter secrets, you can column them on your armpit as well. Addition accessible way to get added long-tail after-effects is to accept a blog, and allocution about what you do, the blazon of casework you provide, and industry annual from your point of view. If you admeasurement your after-effects in an analytics program, you are abiding to be afraid at the advanced array of chase after-effects you see for your articles and casework afterwards your pages are best up by chase engines.

How to aggrandize your continued appendage attendance in Pay-Per-Click

PPC continued appendage agreement are added by accretion your set of keywords. The aboriginal and easiest way to do this is to use the keyword apparatus provided by the business platform. Google Adwords does a abundant job of suggesting long-tail terms, and annihilation that is accordant should be added. Adding beneath accordant agreement may aftereffect in a lower affection score. Whenever possible, the keyword for anniversary appellation should acreage the user on the best accordant folio to the artefact or service. There are assorted means to adapt all of your long-tail terms, but alike a low annual armpit could accept several hundred long-tail keywords in a distinct campaign. About-face tracking is awful recommended, as you will acquisition that some agreement will accept a actual aerial about-face rate, and you will appetite to acclimatize your annual so you can booty advantage of the best phrases. You may additionally agenda that some agreement get poor results, so you should either abeyance the keywords or fix the landing folio so it matches the chump chase appellation better.

One adjustment for breeding continued appendage PPC agreement is not recommended because it may not be annual the time. There are accoutrement that automatically accomplish continued phrases for PPC campaigns, but several of these artlessly accomplish it harder to clue campaigns. Chase engines accept additionally placed restrictions on the cardinal of keywords in an ad group, so you are usually bigger off combing through the annual appropriate by the chase engine’s keyword tool. (You can adhesive your Google Adwords agreement assimilate Yahoo Chase Business and/or MSN Searchcenter, and carnality versa.) We had one annual which had over 40,000 keywords in Yahoo, but back we did a statistical assay we begin that beneath than 3,000 words got a distinct consequence over the antecedent 2 years, so we fabricated the chump added able by deleting all the bare phrases.

In attenuate cases with both SEO and PPC, a few clicks a ages can actualize millions of dollars in revenue. There are assertive items, like abundant accessories and automated machinery, that don’t accept the short-tail chase accumulated that customer articles get. Nonetheless, the aggregation that is optimized for its artefact or annual is activity to be the one that gets clicked, visited, and called. This affectionate of sales befalling can’t be underestimated, alike for companies with a 2-year sales aeon on an abstruse automated process. For abounding companies, the advance of a few thousand dollars on long-tail SEO phrases can acknowledgment millions in profits.

How do you admeasurement long-tail effectiveness? This is generally a boxy question. Short-tail agreement can be abstinent in the amplitude of a few weeks based on ambition about-face rates. If you accept several thousand visits, a 5% about-face bulk on a distinct appellation makes for an accessible decision. On the added ancillary of the coin, if you haven’t gotten 20 visits for a assertive keyword, you don’t accept abundant advice to see if the appellation is accomplishing you any good. Here, you are bigger off evaluating the achievement of the absolute ad group, and free which ads are accepting the best results. If you see that keywords with assertive short-tail admixture phrases aren’t accepting results, you can apparently about-face best of those words off. For the best PPC terms, you should accede architecture SEO pages that analyze the affair (or phrase) in added detail and get a few alien links for these terms.

As a tip for our readers, Google Arcade (AKA Froogle) is a abundant abode to analysis out long-tail agreement for products. If you can catechumen your arcade barrow database into a Google Base feed, afresh upload it to Google shopping, you can accumulation off the abounding altered kinds of searches that bodies accomplish every day. As a rule, accordant advice (product number, description, color, size, price) will advice you aces up on the advanced array of searches bodies accomplish anniversary day.

Executing a long-tail SEO action takes a assertive bulk of work, but it can be awful rewarding. Since abounding of the agreement complex are not as competitive, there is a abeyant for amount savings, abnormally if you are a new business aggravating to breach into accustomed online fields. You can additionally use the long-tail action if you are a baby business with a bound budget, and appetite to carve out a assisting alcove amid huge retail sites that may not alike apprehension your presence. Alike if you are a ample business, you may accept a baby allotment of awful assisting articles that would account from a bigger chase agent presence. In any case, blank the abeyant of long-tail search, alike for companies that accept bound up the short-tail, is a way of abrogation money on the table for addition else.

Be Successful with Google

The following will build a successful site in 1 years time via Google alone. It can be done faster if you are a real go getter, or everyones favorite a self starter.

A) Prep work and begin building content. Long before the domain name is settled on, start putting together notes to build at least a 100 page site. That's just for openers. That's 100 pages of real content, as opposed to link pages, resource pages, about/copyright/tos...etc eg: fluff pages.

B) Domain name:
Easily brandable. You want "google.com" and not "mykeyword.com". Keyword domains are out - branding and name recognition are in - big time in. The value of keywords in a domain name have never been less to se's. Learn the lesson of "goto.com" becomes "Overture.com" and why they did it. It's one of the most powerful gut check calls I've ever seen on the internet. That took serious resolve and nerve to blow away several years of branding. (that is a whole 'nother article, but learn the lesson as it applies to all of us).

C) Site Design:
The simpler the better. Rule of thumb: text content should out weight the html content. The pages should validate and be usable in everything from Lynx to leading edge browsers. eg: keep it close to html 3.2 if you can. Spiders are not to the point they really like eating html 4.0 and the mess that it can bring. Stay away from heavy: flash, dom, java, java script. Go external with scripting languages if you must have them - there is little reason to have them that I can see - they will rarely help a site and stand to hurt it greatly due to many factors most people don't appreciate (search engines distaste for js is just one of them).
Arrange the site in a logical manner with directory names hitting the top keywords you wish to hit.
You can also go the other route and just throw everything in root (this is rather controversial, but it's been producing good long term results across many engines).
Don't clutter and don't spam your site with frivolous links like "best viewed" or other counter like junk. Keep it clean and professional to the best of your ability.

Learn the lesson of Google itself - simple is retro cool - simple is what surfers want.

Speed isn't everything, it's almost the only thing. Your site should respond almost instantly to a request. If you get into even 3-4 seconds delay until "something happens" in the browser, you are in long term trouble. That 3-4 seconds response time may vary for site destined to live in other countries than your native one. The site should respond locally within 3-4 seconds (max) to any request. Longer than that, and you'll lose 10% of your audience for every second. That 10% could be the difference between success and not.

The pages:

D) Page Size:
The smaller the better. Keep it under 15k if you can. The smaller the better. Keep it under 12k if you can. The smaller the better. Keep it under 10k if you can - I trust you are getting the idea here. Over 5k and under 10k. Ya - that bites - it's tough to do, but it works. It works for search engines, and it works for surfers. Remember, 80% of your surfers will be at 56k or even less.

E) Content:
Build one page of content and put online per day at 200-500 words. If you aren't sure what you need for content, start with the Overture keyword suggester and find the core set of keywords for your topic area. Those are your subject starters.

F) Density, position, yada...
Simple old fashioned seo from the ground up.
Use the keyword once in title, once in description tag, once in a heading, once in the url, once in bold, once in italic, once high on the page, and hit the density between 5 and 20% (don't fret about it). Use good sentences and speel check it ;-) Spell checking is becoming important as se's are moving to auto correction during searches. There is no longer a reason to look like you can't spell (unless you really are phonetically challenged).

G) Outbound Links:
From every page, link to one or two high ranking sites under that particular keyword. Use your keyword in the link text (this is ultra important for the future).

H) Insite Cross links.
(cross links in this context are links WITHIN the same site)
Link to on topic quality content across your site. If a page is about food, then make sure it links it to the apples and veggies page. Specifically with Google, on topic cross linking is very important for sharing your pr value across your site. You do NOT want an "all star" page that out performs the rest of your site. You want 50 pages that produce 1 referral each a day and do NOT want 1 page that produces 50 referrals a day. If you do find one page that drastically out produces the rest of the site with Google, you need to off load some of that pr value to other pages by cross linking heavily. It's the old share the wealth thing.

I) Put it Online.
Don't go with virtual hosting - go with a stand alone ip.
Make sure the site is "crawlable" by a spider. All pages should be linked to more than one other page on your site, and not more than 2 levels deep from root. Link the topic vertically as much as possible back to root. A menu that is present on every page should link to your sites main "topic index" pages (the doorways and logical navigation system down into real content).
Don't put it online before you have a quality site to put online. It's worse to put a "nothing" site online, than no site at all. You want it flushed out from the start.

Go for a listing in the ODP. If you have the budget, then submit to Looksmart and Yahoo. If you don't have the budget, then try for a freebie on Yahoo (don't hold your breath).

J) Submit
Submit the root to: Google, Fast, Altavista, WiseNut, (write Teoma), DirectHit, and Hotbot. Now comes the hard part - forget about submissions for the next six months. That's right - submit and forget.

K) Logging and Tracking:
Get a quality logger/tracker that can do justice to inbound referrals based on log files (don't use a lame graphic counter - you need the real deal). If your host doesn't support referrers, then back up and get a new host. You can't run a modern site without full referrals available 24x7x365 in real time.

L) Spiderlings:
Watch for spiders from se's. Make sure those that are crawling the full site, can do so easily. If not, double check your linking system (use standard hrefs) to make sure the spider found it's way throughout the site. Don't fret if it takes two spiderings to get your whole site done by Google or Fast. Other se's are pot luck and doubtful that you will be added at all if not within 6 months.

M) Topic directories.
Almost every keyword sector has an authority hub on it's topic. Go submit within the guidelines.

N) Links
Look around your keyword sector in Googles version of the ODP. (this is best done AFTER getting an odp listing - or two). Find sites that have links pages or freely exchange links. Simply request a swap. Put a page of on topic, in context links up your self as a collection spot.
Don't freak if you can't get people to swap links - move on. Try to swap links with one fresh site a day. A simple personal email is enough. Stay low key about it and don't worry if site Z won't link with you - they will - eventually they will.

O) Content.
One page of quality content per day. Timely, topical articles are always the best. Try to stay away from to much "bloggin" type personal stuff and look more for "article" topics that a general audience will like. Hone your writing skills and read up on the right style of "web speak" that tends to work with the fast and furious web crowd.

Lots of text breaks - short sentences - lots of dashes - something that reads quickly.

Most web users don't actually read, they scan. This is why it is so important to keep low key pages today. People see a huge overblown page by random, and a portion of them will hit the back button before trying to decipher it. They've got better things to do that waste 15 seconds (a stretch) at understanding your whiz bang flash menu system. Because some big support site can run flashed out motorhead pages, that is no indication that you can. You don't have the pull factor they do.

Use headers, and bold standout text liberally on your pages as logical separators. I call them scanner stoppers where the eye will logically come to rest on the page.

P) Gimmicks.
Stay far away from any "fades of the day" or anything that appears spammy, unethical, or tricky. Plant yourself firmly on the high ground in the middle of the road.

Q) Link backs
When YOU receive requests for links, check the site out before linking back with them. Check them through Google and their pr value. Look for directory listings. Don't link back to junk just because they asked. Make sure it is a site similar to yours and on topic.

R) Rounding out the offerings:
Use options such as Email-a-friend, forums, and mailing lists to round out your sites offerings. Hit the top forums in your market and read, read, read until your eyes hurt you read so much.
Stay away from "affiliate fades" that insert content on to your site.

S) Beware of Flyer and Brochure Syndrome
If you have an ecom site or online version of bricks and mortar, be careful not to turn your site into a brochure. These don't work at all. Think about what people want. They aren't coming to your site to view "your content", they are coming to your site looking for "their content". Talk as little about your products and yourself as possible in articles (raise eyebrows...yes, I know).

T) Build one page of content per day.
Head back to the Overture suggestion tool to get ideas for fresh pages.

U) Study those logs.
After 30-60 days you will start to see a few referrals from places you've gotten listed. Look for the keywords people are using. See any bizarre combinations? Why are people using those to find your site? If there is something you have over looked, then build a page around that topic. Retro engineer your site to feed the search engine what it wants.
If your site is about "oranges", but your referrals are all about "orange citrus fruit", then you can get busy building articles around "citrus" and "fruit" instead of the generic "oranges".
The search engines will tell you exactly what they want to be fed - listen closely, there is gold in referral logs, it's just a matter of panning for it.

V) Timely Topics
Nothing breeds success like success. Stay abreast of developments in your keyword sector. If big site "Z" is coming out with product "A" at the end of the year, then build a page and have it ready in October so that search engines get it by December. eg: go look at all the Xbox and XP sites in Google right now - those are sites that were on the ball last summer.

W) Friends and Family
Networking is critical to the success of a site. This is where all that time you spend in forums will pay off. pssst: Here's the catch-22 about forums: lurking is almost useless. The value of a forum is in the interaction with your fellow colleagues and cohorts. You learn long term by the interaction - not by just reading.
Networking will pay off in link backs, tips, email exchanges, and it will put you "in the loop" of your keyword sector.

X) Notes, Notes, Notes
If you build one page per day, you will find that brain storm like inspiration will hit you in the head at some magic point. Whether it is in the shower (dry off first), driving down the road (please pull over), or just parked at your desk, write it down! 10 minutes of work later, you will have forgotten all about that great idea you just had. Write it down, and get detailed about what you are thinking. When the inspirational juices are no longer flowing, come back to those content ideas. It sounds simple, but it's a life saver when the ideas stop coming.

Y) Submission check at six months
Walk back through your submissions and see if you got listed in all the search engines you submitted to after six months. If not, then resubmit and forget again. Try those freebie directories again too.

Z) Build one page of quality content per day.
Starting to see a theme here? Google loves content, lots of quality content. Broad based over a wide range of keywords. At the end of a years time, you should have around 400 pages of content. That will get you good placement under a wide range of keywords, generate recip links, and overall position your site to stand on it's own two feet.

Do those 26 things, and I guarantee you that in ones years time you will call your site a success. It will be drawing between 500 and 2000 referrals a day from search engines. If you build a good site with an average of 4 to 5 pages per user, you should be in the 10-15k page views per day range in one years time. What you do with that traffic is up to you, but that is more than enough to "do something" with.

Google Dance?

What Is A Google Dance?

The name "Google Dance" is often used to describe the index update of the Google search engine. Google's index update occurs on average once per month. It can be identified by significant movement in search results and especially by Google's cache of all indexed pages reflecting the status of Google's last spidering. But the update does not proceed as a switch from one index to another at one point in time. In fact, it takes several days to complete the index update. During this period, the old and the new index alternate on www.google.com. At an early stage, the results from the new index occur sporadically. But later on, they appear more frequently. Google dances.

Technical Background on Google

The Google search engine pulls its results from more than 10,000 servers which are simple Linux PCs that are used by Google for reasons of cost. Naturally, an index update cannot be proceeded on all those servers at the same time. One server after the other has to be updated with the new index.

Many webmasters think that, during the Google Dance, Google is in some way able to control if a server with the new index or a server with an old index responds to a search query. But, since Google's index is inverse, this would be very complicated. As we will show below, there is no such control within the system. In fact, the reason for the Google Dance is Google's way of using the Domain Name System (DNS).

Google Dance and DNS

Not only Google's index is spread over more than 10,000 servers, but also these servers are, as of now, placed in eight different data centers. These data centers are mainly located in the US (i.e. Santa Clara, California and Herndon, Virginia), indeed, in June 2002 Google's first European data center in Zurich, Switzerland went online. Very likely, there are more data centers to come, which will perhaps be spread over the whole world. However, in January and April 2003 Google has put two data centers on stream which are again located in the US.

In order to direct traffic to all these data centers, Google could thoeretically record all queries centrally and then send them to the data centers. But this would obviously be inefficient. In fact, each data center has its own IP address (numerical address on the internet) and the way these IP addresses are accessed is managed by the Domain Name System.

Basically, the DNS works like this: On the Internet, data transfers always take place in-between IP addresses. The information about which domain resolves to which IP address is provided by the name servers of the DNS. When a user enters a domain into his browser, a locally configured name server gets him the IP address for that domain by contacting the name server which is responsible for that domain. (The DNS is structured hierarchically. Illustrating the whole process would go beyond the scope of this paper.) The IP address is then cached by the name server, so that it is not necessary to contact the responsible name server each time a connection is built up to a domain.

The records for a domain at the responsible name server constitute for how long the record may be cached by a caching name server. This is the Time To Live (TTL) of a domain. As soon as the TTL expires, the caching name server has to fetch the record for a domain again from the responsible name server. Quite often, the TTL is set to one or more days. In contrast, the Time To Live of the domain www.google.com is only five minutes. So, a name server may only cache Google's IP address for five minutes and has then to look up the IP address again.

Each time, Google's name server is contacted, it sends back the IP address of only one data center. In this way, Google queries are always directed to different data centers by changing DNS records. On the one hand, the DNS records may be based on the load of the single data centers. In this way, Google would conduct a simple form of load balancing by its use of the DNS. On the other hand, the geographical location of a caching name server may influence how often it receives the single data centers' IP addresses. So, the distance for data transmissions can be reduced. In order to show the DNS records of the domain www.google.com, we present them here by the example of one caching name server.

How data centers, DNS and Google Dance are related, is easily answered. During the Google Dance, the data centers do not receive the new index at the same time. In fact, the new index is transferred to one data center after the other. When a user queries Google during the Google Dance, he may get the results from a data center which still has the old index at one point im time and from a data center which has the new index a few minutes later. From the users perspective, the index update took place within some minutes. But of course, this procedure may reverse, so that Google switches seemingly between the old and the new index.

The Google Dance Test Domains www2 & www3

The beginning of a Google Dance can always be watched at the test domains www2.google.com and www3.google.com. Those domains normally have stable DNS records which make the domains resolve to only one (often the same) IP address. Before the Google Dance begins, at least one of the test domains is assigned the IP address of the data center that receives the new index first.

Building up a completely new index once per month can cause quite some trouble. After all, Google has to spider some billion documents an then to process many TeraBytes of data. Therefore, testing the new index is inevitable. Of course, the folks at Google don't need the test domains themselves. Most certainly, they have many options to check a new index internally, but they do not have a lot of time to conduct the tests.

So, the reason for having www2 and www3 is rather to show the new index to webmasters which are interested in their upcoming rankings. Many of these webmasters discuss the new index at the Google forums out on the web. These discussions can be observed by Google employees. At that time, the general public cannot see the new index yet, because the DNS records for www.google.com normally do not point to the IP address of the data center that is updated first when the update begins.

As soon as Google's test community of forums members does not find any severe malfunctions caused by the new index, Google's DNS records are ready to make www.google.com resolve the the data center that is updated first. This is the time when the Google Dance begins. But if severe malfunctions become obvious during this test phase, there is still the possibility to cancel the update at the other data centers. The domain www.google.com would not resolve to the data center which has the flawed index and the general public could not take any notice about it. In this case, the index could be rebuilt or the web could be spidered again.

So, the search results which are to be seen on www2.google.com and www3.google.com will always appear on www.google.com later on, as long as there is a regular index update. However, there may be minor fluctuations. On the one hand, the index at one data center never absolutely equals the index at another data center. We can easily check this by watching the number of results for the same query at the data center domains listed above, which often differ from each other. On the other hand, it is often assumed that the iterative PageRank calculation is not finished yet, when the Google Dance begins so that preliminary values exert influence on rankings at that point in time.

Bing, SEO, and Google (SEO) Tips and Info

Bing is doing its best to differentiate itself from Google. Attempting to claim some high ground, Microsoft is positioning Bing as the world’s first “decision engine” as opposed to its predecessors, the search engines. Differentiation requires using different algorithms and a new design on the search engine results page. New design or not the SERP’s on Bing do resemble Google’s at first glance.

Depending on the search, Bing delivers either highly relevant results or something a little less so. Searches in Microsoft’s wheelhouse of health, local, travel, and shopping are better than most others on Bing. The wheelhouse group was not arrived at by accident. These markets carry high potential for advertising revenues and have historically been among the highest revenue generators on the internet.

Bing isn’t going as far as saying that it will change search engine optimization, yet. In early June, a whitepaper released by Bing’s Webmaster Center Team stated “Ultimately, SEO is still SEO. Bing doesn’t change that. Bing’s new user interface design simply adds new opportunities to searchers to find what the information they want more quickly and easily, and that benefits webmasters who have taken the time to work on the quality of their content and website design.”

The Bing Team emphasizes that good content and search engine optimization are crucial elements in website design so it appears that what applies to Google and Yahoo will work with Bing. It also appears that attempts to optimize for Bing will bring similar results to the other search engines as well. The Bing team hasn’t given much other information beyond emphasizing on page content and standard SEO practices and maybe that what’s important at the moment. Based on PowerSet, Bing will definitely give more weight to content, at the expense of visuals.

Still in its infancy, Bing will need to broaden its wheelhouse to avoid turning off searchers that come over for a try, find a bunch of irrelevant results and never return. Initial traffic numbers were conflicted but it appeared that Bing had attracted some significant numbers, whether at the expense of Google and Yahoo, or not. The rest remains to be seen.

Google Changes the Future of SEO

The imminent death of the heart was the hot topic among professionals in a while. Some worry about his career, because they threatened the search engine to constantly improve their technology. Search engines are now fully adapted their strategy against Spammers assessing and improving user experience. For example, Google's intention to improve the efficiency of research and provides relevant search results. So what all this means for the future of heart? Sinus died an inevitable consequence of the evolution of search engines?

People have predicted the end of the breast from the beginning. While things are always changing in front of and smarter search engines, SEO will adapt to these changes, because the last. Although the list of search engines web site does not require sites to pay compensation, there before.

Google and what they mean for the future of the chest

Looking for solutions to combat spam and improve the user experience, Google is preparing for the implementation of a number of changes in behavior and intentions of the research. One possibility is to build the connection will become much less important for the future and the sinuses, because Google will set a value based on one site that visitors to communicate with him. The ultimate goal is to create content sites that encourage visitors to read, share, tag, and so on.

Social levels through voting is another feature that search engines are adapted to ensure the town controlled by the user. Search engine users can have the opportunity to vote for websites and web pages you want to be classified on the basis of this vote. Model is similar to that observed in the social voting site Digg reddit a. Clearly, the search engine will find a way to ensure that votes are natural to avoid the use of black hat SEO fault robots in search engines.

Google and other search engines are all inside the bar. In the beginning, it will be difficult to do for professionals in their work, but the end result is positive. Spammers and black hat SEO is less likely to succeed in their efforts and unscrupulous search engines, users have with the content that is relevant.

People, not machines

As always, the goal for webmasters and professionals must appeal to the population. People spend so much time trying to bug the search engines you have forgotten that, ultimately, serve the people! Your website must be optimized, but the priority should be to meet the needs and find solutions. With respect to the direction in which the behavior and human activity ultimately determine classification. As part of their success depends on its ability to engage people through media and social marketing.
